The Flag and the Moral Majority.
At some point during the Nixon administration, the Left relinquished two platforms/political symbols to the growing religious Right: the Flag and Morality. Hence, the present political landscape has clear party archetypes/stereotypes that, my goodness, the left needs to address and target not only with regard to the next administration/presidential election but more importantly to change the "Brand Packaging" of the entire Democratic party. I am sick and tired of being perceived as unpatriotic and immoral given my political affiliation.
Note to Neocon's: What does our flag represent, Hmmm? Our leaders? Our "Country"? Our administration? Our Land?....None of the above...it represents the PEOPLE, NOT our Government. There was a time in our history when political dissent against our government was the highest form of Patriotism...to speak out against a government that has failed to uphold or, at worst, remove/erode our civil liberties....to diminish the people's ability to "establish justice, promote the general welfare, and to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity" warranted and demanded political activism by its constituents. This notion has been completely subverted by the right. Psycho-babble rant: The right can't stand the notion of change...hence the term Progressive and it's left-leaning connotation. Go up to any conservative and at their core is resistance to change. One could say that it has to do with the social theory that suggest that those in power conspire to remain in power. I see it as that and more...conservatives need order...change is chaos.
And regarding morality...I'm a democrat, WATCH OUT!...Immoral communist alert! Lets take a closer look at this, shall we?
Political issues that are important to the Supergoober and how it is viewed by a Neo-Con:
1. Fairness as it relates to wages...."How DARE you feel that women should be paid as much as men, or that the minimum wage be increased...that's downright UNFAIR and IMMORAL."
2. A women's right to choose..."My Goodness, you support MURDER! Fuck the consequences, you cannot abort under any circumstances! 1 Million unwanted pregnancies...so what...those women have to live with the consequences of their promiscuity!"
3. Supporting gay marriage and against discriminating, beating, and killing gay, lesbian, and transgendered people..."Marriage is sacred, why can't you understand that you godless cretin. I don't want my child to turn gay with your social permissiveness! Read Leviticus!...homosexuality is evil!"
4. An administration that tells us the truth about going to war..."No No No, they were deceived just like I was. Everything will be fine in Iraq if you just BELIEVE in the President. Calling him a liar are you?!?!...you unpatriotic coward!"
5. Social programs for the poor, disadvantaged, disabled, ESL folks..."My god, pull yourselves up from your bootstraps! Chronic treatment resistant Schizophrenia?...the way I see it, that's another word for LAZY. And anywayz, our country will always need schleps that will do the work that no-one else wants to do, at a bargain price at that! Nothing wrong with that. You reap what you sow you bleeding heart."
6. Investing in stem cell research..."Baby Killer, Baby Killer!!"
7. Treating folks with addiction and substance abuse problems rather than incarcerating them..."It's about Will, my friend. They should have just said NO. They've gotten themselves into this mess and a moral society should punish the wicked."
8. Health care for all..."No No No, that would be unfair to the hardworking, god-fearing, tax-paying, law-abiding citizen. Don't you see? It's all zero sum. If you give to the lazy and poor, you will take away from the hardworking!..and that would be unfair and thereby immoral!"
9. Filling up my blue bin with recyclables and my green bin with compostables..."You fool, you've been duped! Don't you know that recycling is BAD for the environment?"
10. I believe that species extinction is immoral..."No it isn't you idiot. It's natural selection. So what if human encroachment has destroyed a particular species natural habitat...if they couldn't adapt, then too bad, soo sad. Haven't you read Darwin you idiot?"
11. We are contributing to global warming and I don't want to destroy the earth..."Man, that's all propaganda you moron. There's NO WAY we can destroy the ozone layer or increase the global temperature...you're talking crazy!"

Hear hear P!!! Man now you know what I go through out in the Red State.....we had the Gay Marriage issue out here concerning defining marriage in the State Constitution. One of the big Baptist Churches out here bought 2 hours of air time on a Network channel to preach how evil Gays are and how evil Gay Marriage is. I voted against it of course, I don't believe in discrimination of any kind and frankly don't care who marries who....
I feel for you bro. Politics aside, I truly believe that even folks in the Red States have the same capacity for compassion and progressive thinking. Unfortunately, due to the social/cultural/racial homogeneity of most Red States, folks don't work, play, or run into alot of "minorities" (both racial and cultural). If they did, I'm sure it would dispel alot of their notions about their "vileness".
As a tangent, just watched "Flags of our Fathers" and "Letters from Iwo Jima"; good art/movies can have a powerful impact on our pre-conceived beliefs of a race or event in our history. I'm sure you saw them....Later
